Learn to drive in Sutton
Join the thousands of people that have learnt to drive with our automatic and manual instructors in Sutton
ELITE Driving School have a well established and knowledgeable team of both manual and automatic driving instructors providing driving lessons in the Sutton and Morden areas.
Unfortunately, there has been a cut back in driving test centre in this area in recent years. In the late 2000’s there were two test centres in Wallington, one in Sutton, and one in Morden. Now the only centre remaining out of these is on Tudor Drive in Lower Morden, although the centre in Mitcham is not too far away, but that falls under a CR postcode. These are a busy test centres, which see hundreds of tests conducted every week.
The Morden test centre is located above the shops on the corner of Tudor Drive and Epsom Road. The test centre has no dedicated parking spaces, and spaces on the road are limited. So your instructor will ensure that your are confident in parking, as well as moving off safely onto busy roads. Just because the test centre doesn’t have a car park. don’t think that you might not be asked to perform a forward or reverse bay park. The test area does include many public car parks, so you could still be asked to perform any one of the four manoeuvrers, plus possibly an emergency stop, plus 20 minutes of independent driving.
The area has some challenging features, including the busy Sutton and Morden town centres with one-way systems, varying speed limits, and bus lanes. There are also large complex roundabouts, including the infamous traffic light controlled and multilane Rose Hill gyratory roundabout. There are also several offside to offside traffic light controlled crossroads dotted along the A217 dual carriageways.
Whilst learning to drive in these areas is great for your test, there are also varying other road types and conditions that will help you develop your skills to help you become a safe and competent driver beyond your test, including the A3 with it’s multilane dual carriageway, exit and entry slip roads, and 50mph and 70mph speed limits.
Your ELITE driving instructor will provide you with a structured learning syllabus, and you will get our free Apps to help you pass your theory test, plus track your lessons and progress.

What to expect from your driving lessons
Number of driving lessons
We’re often asked how many driving lessons will be needed before passing the driving test. The DVSA state the average learner takes around 50 hours of professional lessons, plus 20 hours of private practice. In reality most pupils that learn with ELITE take far fewer hours than this. However, it is impossible to answer accurately how many hours are needed, as it varies hugely due to many influencing factors. Firstly, everyone learns at a different rate. Some individuals are naturally gifted with coordination and car controls, and others need more practice to perfect the required skills.
Learning in a manual or automatic
Then there is the consideration of whether you are learning to drive a manual or automatic car. More lessons may be needed in a manual, it all depends how quickly you develop clutch control. Although once you have mastered the basic controls to operate either vehicle type, the majority of learning hours are spent developing the skills needed to read the road, plan, anticipate the actions of other road users, and manage risks on the road. So whether to learn in a manual or automatic car is a personal choice, and at the moment it’s around a 50/50 split which one people are choosing.
Learning in different areas
The area in which you are learning to drive and taking your driving test could also affect the number of lessons you need. Learning to drive in more densely populated towns like Croydon and Morden will have different challenges compared to somewhere more rural like Redhill. It’s different again in somewhere like Crawley, due to the volume of large roundabouts and high speed dual carriageways. The simple fact is that you should take as many lessons as you need to become a safe and competent driver.
